Hi and welcome to the “Cambrian 48 Winter Series”, which will be held annually on the 28th and 29th of December.
A self-supported 50 mile Trek over the scenic but barren wilderness of the Cambrian Mountains from South (Tai-newydd nr Trecastle) to North (Llanidloes in the heart of mid-Wales) in 48 hours, on a linear route that also takes you through the picturesque Elan Valley. The participants will carry their required rations and equipment, whilst Navigating their own way over the full course. Our preference would be for participants to enter as 3 or 4 Person Teams, which would enhance the challenge and competition. However, we will still gladly welcome individual participants who wish to test themselves as well.
A recommended itinerary of required equipment and rations will be provided in the Event Pack prior to the Event. For those who require guidance or a refresher in Navigation and associated skills, a pre-event Navigation Day Course can be organised at the participant’s request.
A support team of Directing Staff will monitor progress of the participants throughout the course (Sweeper Team behind participants and mobile units at key Rendezvous Points), whilst intermittent Check Points will record progress and monitor participant welfare from Start to Finish.
The outline route is summarised as follows:
Day 1: The event starts on the Old Roman Road by the Tumulus (ancient burial mound) and heads North-West to Dagfa and then North-East to Penywaun. From Penywaun the route continues North-East around the boundary of Ministry of Defence (MoD) Training Ranges to reach Tirabad. From Tirabad the route will head North to Llanwrtyd Wells. From Llanwrtyd Wells the route will continue North to Abergwesyn, and then North-East to reach the Cefen Garw Wood and the end of Day 1 Basecamp.
Day 2: On leaving the Basecamp at Cefen Garw Wood, the route takes you North over Carnau to Llanerch Cawr at the South end of the Caban-coch Reservoir. The route continues North along the Caban-coch and Garreg-ddu Reservoirs, turning West at the top of Gwaelod-y-rhos wood, and then heads North along the Western side of the Penygarreg and Craig Goch Reservoirs to reach Pont ar Elan. At Pont ar Elan the route heads North-West to Abergwngu, and from Abergwngu North and then North-East Llangurig. From Llangurig the route heads North-East through Pen-hyle-mawr, over Marsh’s Pool, through Cefen-y-Bwlch to reach Llanidloes Town Centre/the Finish.
Please note, this event is held in the depth of winter and is classified as “hard”, which requires the participants to possess a good level of fitness, have experience in similar long distance trekking events, possess good navigational skills and the physical/metal resolve to undertake and successfully complete the event in such exposed wilderness terrain with the good possibility of all the elements of Winter being against you. It is mandatory that all participants wear appropriate clothing to suit mountain terrain and weather conditions, carry the essential personal safety and navigational equipment with a full understanding of its respective use, carry/consume hi-calorie food and adequate water to sustain themselves through the event.
In respect to footwear, Participants must wear appropriate mountain boots with good ankle support or fell-running/approach shoes. Trainers or any such unsuitable footwear will not be permitted.
There will be no exceptions in these requisites, where participants who do not comply will not be permitted to partake in the event. Sorry, but this is primarily for your own personal safety, and also to alleviate the risk of you compromising the safety of others.
A memento of the event will be given to all participants, whilst the 1st, 2nd & 3rd best times over the course will receive certificate for their efforts.
This will be more than your run of the mill Endurance Event, which will test your stamina as well as will power over a 48 hour period, in some of the wildest terrain the Cambrian Mountains have to offer.
