The Bwlch Nant-yr-Arian Visitor Centre is the perfect introduction to the forests of Rheidol and Ystwyth, which lie across the headwaters of the two rivers from which they take their name, to the north and east of the coastal town of Aberystwyth.
Located on the summit of a pass at the western extremity of the Cambrian Mountains, the centre enjoys stunning views out over the coastal lowlands of Cardigan Bay on one side, and the wild uplands of central Wales on the other. The area is a haven for birdlife such as the Red Kite, Buzzard, Black Grouse, Snipe, Woodcock, Goshawk and Merlin, and indeed one of the centres main attractions is an opportunity to see the daily 3pm feeding of Red Kites on the shores of the local lakes. On display at our Visitor Centre is an exhibition explaining the origins of the remarkable landscape which surrounds us, and the work of the Forestry Commission in managing our many woodland environments for the benefit of the wildlife, and the needs of recreation and timber production.
Bwlch Nant-yr-Arian has two circular walks through the Rheidol Forest taking in many scenic viewing points and lake shores. The walks are 1.5 miles (2.4kms) and 5.5miles (8.5kms) in length respectively. For cyclists, there is a demanding 10 mile mountain bike trail; with new trails currently being developed. There is ample car parking at the centre and a tea room and shop catering for all your needs. We also run four Orienteering courses, offering a range of physical and navigational challenges; please ask for a descriptive leaflet and map from the shop.
The Bwlch Nant-y-arian Visitor Centre is situated some 20 miles to the west of Llanidloes (10 miles from Aberystwith) by the side of the A44.
