The Cambrian Endurance Spartan Series of self-supported events was conceived in 2016 to deliver a series of events that would truly test the competitors whilst giving them the opportunity to test their perceived boundaries, enabling them to acclimatise to the intensity though the series of events in starting off with a Spartan 10k, then moving up the Spartan 20k and ultimately topping-out with the main Spartan 65k ultimate challenge.

Set in the wilds of the spectacularly scenic but sparse Cambrian Mountains, the routes of all the events in the series are classified in its Technical Difficulty (as per Ordinance Survey guidance) as "Difficult" which encompasses:

  • Steep ascents and descents
  • Depending on level of fitness & experience the Route could be exited in 2.5 - 3.5 hours
  • Mountainous. Steeper sections with rocky surfaces that require very good coordination. Could involve crossing streams or marshes
  • Little signage, paths may be poorly defined. Familiarity with map and compass navigation needed, particularly in poor weather

Even though fully supported by the experience CME Team, these events are classified as "self-supported" where participants need to be proficient with the above requisites, to successfully undertake, safely complete and ultimately earn the much deserved and coveted Endurance Spartan Trophy for best performance in the Series.

Whilst the Spartan Series will only be hosted every 3 years, individual events in the series will be hosted annually as a "taster" to entice the Spartans out there. The "Series" will be hosted on the Summer Bank holiday, with the Spartan 10k and Spartan 20k on a Saturday and the Spartan 65k on the Sunday. Next, the Spartan 20k will be hosted in 2023, leading to the Series being hosted in 2024.

Even though classified as a Self-supported Event; there will be three Check Points at the circa 2.5k, 5k, and 7.5k waypoints on Route. Experienced CME Marshals will man each Check Point and maintain Positive Tracking of all participants. An experienced CME Back-marker will sweep the route behind the last participant/s, and close-down Check Points as they proceed to the Finish. These Check Points will also be the drinking water top-up stations for all participants.

Some Key Views en route

Are you a Spartan capable of taking-on the first event in the series the "Spartan 10k"? ..... do you dare .....

2022 Endurance Spartan 10k

In brief, the route starts out in the Historic Market Town of Llanidloes, ascends steeply to Cefn-cwmeryr and descends down Pen-y-banc to cross the river; then ascends steeply to Caencoed and decends to Lower Glynbrochan; then ascends steeply to the top of Pant-Maenog and sharply descends through Cefn-y-bwlch down to Lower Glandulas to cross at the confluence of the rivers Severn and Dulas; and finally heads back along the Main Road pavement into the Llanidloes Town Centre and the Finish.

Please note: whilst the route will have directional arrows to guide participants along the course at key changes of direction, it will NOT be "hand-railed" throughout. CME reserve the right to change sections of the route without notice to accommodate unforeseen safety issues or aspects specific to respective Farm requirements.

Note: that a majority of the route is through private "working" Farmland with expressive permission from the landowners, for the Event day only. Participants must stringently respect this, and ensure all closed gates are left closed and open gates left as found when travelling through such Farmland. Strict compliance with the "Country Code" is required.

Follow us on Facebook for updates and event info as we progress the planning & implementation stages of the Event.

An in-depth Route Description, detailed Route Map and the Route Coordinate GPX File will be included in the Entrants Pack that is electronically provided once you have booked your place and paid the entry fee.
