What is Twinning about?

A twinning link is a friendship agreement involving co-operation between two communities in different countries. The two communities travel to visit each other, stay with local people and join in local events. It builds links and understanding and is great fun!

Where is Llanidloes twinned with?

Llanidloes and area is twinned with Derval in France. Derval is situated in the Loire Atlantique department and Pays de la Loire region, and shares a lot of heritage with nearby Brittany. Derval has 3,500 citizens and a thriving community similar in size to Llanidloes, and with a similar rural / small friendly town profile.

How long has Llanidloes had a Twinning agreement?

The agreement between Llanidloes and Derval was offically signed outside Llanidloes Town Hall in 1995 by the Mayor of Llanidloes at the time (Cllr JohnGriffiths) and the Mayor of Derval (Monsieur Michel Hunault). The Twinning has been going strong ever since and has nearly reached its 30th birthday.

What happens in a Twinning Exchange?

A Llanidloes group travels together to Derval on a bus, and sometimes a few people travel under their own steam or join if they happen to be nearby at the time. Local gifts are taken and presented to the host community. The costs of transport are shared (bus and ferry) but once in Derval everything else is free of charge because local hosts provide accommodation and take their guests to a schedule of events and activities the Derval Twinning Committee has organised. Some events are in Derval itself and others use the bus to take the Twinning group to various interesting places in the area. You can opt in or out of these organised activities as you wish.
